5566's Hong Kong Autograph Session A Success!,

Posted in today's Ming Pao:

Taiwan band 5566 has been around for six years, but yesterday was the first time they came to Hong Kong for the promotion of their new album, in the Metropole Centre, Tseung Kwan O, . They attracted more than 1,000 fans and 50 fans began queuing overnight at 10pm to get good seats. 5566 have a broad range of fans, including a couple of grannies lining up for the pao pao session. Fans screamed constantly.

5566 members include Sun Xiezhi (Tony), Wang Renfu(Zax), Wang Shaowei(Sam), Hu Meng Zhe (Jason) and have released 11 albums in 6 years. They were in Hong Kong to promote their new album 'Bravo'. Their first performance was the fast song "Roaming China (Man You Chong Guo)," and their singing and dancing led fans to an emotional high. As well, their pronounciation of Cantonese as "we" as a "Russian" and "album" as a " turning point "and ultra popular Wang Shaowei said with a laugh:" I am of Liangzi!" instead of "I am a Liang Zai'(handsome guy) were funny. When they said they may hold a concert in Hong Kong, the screams of the fans in the shopping mall were like sonic booms.

Lucky fans had close contact with 5566 for a number of interactive 'pao pao' sessions; a 76-year-old granny hugged Xiezhi, one fan attempted to pick up Mengzhe but was unsuccessful. Wangchaowei was given a big bear hug. They also ate cake that the fans brought. The signatures will be sent a 500 chip.

As it was the first time 5566 came to Hong Kong, they said that they were very happy and feel unworthy but hope that they can go there more and on tour. Since many Taiwanese boybands recently went there too, they were asked if they worried before coming to Hong Kong? Wangrenfu said: "5566 has been out for six years, and will inevitably be used to compare with other bands, but we only concentrate on our own work and see if there is any progress. The most important thing is to do our utmost to keep Fans happy.

Early over the same period before they released their new album, a FRH member had joked "I hope some groups sell more than 5,566 albums". When asked, Wangrenfu said: "We do not mind, I believe that was only an analogy. 183 Club doesn't mean they only sell 183 records. "

Malaysian Singer Nicholas Teo to Hold First Concert in Malaysia

Taiwan-based Malaysian singer Nicholas Teo will hold his first concert on home ground in March. The concert will be held at Stadium Putra, and while the venue’s 10,000-seating capacity is considerably challenging to fill, more so for a first-timer, Teo says he has confidence in his fans.

“We waited for a very long time for it (the venue). Our first consideration for this concert was the venue.” At a press conference on Wednesday to announce concert details, the organizers said more than RM900,000 had already been invested in the preparations for the event.

“I’ve been training daily and even recorded a theme song for this concert. My guest will be a female artiste and I’ll be singing a duet with her,” Teo, 26, said.

Warner Music Malaysia managing director Cheah Su Kong presented Teo with an earpiece specially made for use during his concert.

Winning the 2002 Astro Talent Quest with a heart-felt rendition of Huang Hun helped launch the Sarawakian’s singing career. Teo has since released three albums 1st Choice, Only Nicholas, and Prince. His biggest hit in 2007, Wang Zi (Prince) sold more than 100,000 downloads on caller ringback tone alone.

Apart from making music, Teo has also made forays into acting. He was the leading man in Taiwanese drama Smiling Pasta and Malaysia’s first award-winning Cantonese movie 3rd Generation. He also provided the voice for the Chinese version of Ratatouille.

One of the few Malaysian artistes who have successfully broken into overseas markets, Teo is well-known in China, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, South Korea and Japan.

Nicholas [From Now On] Live in Malaysia will be held at Stadium Putra, Bukit Jalil Indoor Stadium on March 29 at 8pm.

Concert to be held in Malaysia on March 29th, Nicholas does not mind putting up a "revealing" performance

Reporter: Li Xiu Yun

Kuala Lumpur: Under the anticipation of many, "Prince" Nicholas finally settled on the date when he would be performing in his hometown. He was thoroughly confident of his own figure and did not mind revealing onstage.

Nicholas' "From Now On" Malaysia Concert will take place at 8pm on March 29th(Saturday) at Putra Indoor Stadium at Bukit Jalil.

When being inquired about the details of the concert by the media, Nicholas appeared mysterious and caused the former to have the feeling that "reaches the throat but not the stomach".

Upon repeated questioning by the media, Nicholas only disclosed a little information, saying, "I'm really happy that she is willing to be my first major concert's guest performer. She's a female. Previously, we had collaborated once due to a less careful situation. On the actual day of the concert, I will have an interactive type of performance with her."

Estimated investment of RM900,000

For this concert, the record company was especially generous and invested a figure of RM900,000. As to this huge favour, Nicholas did feel pressured but he was utterly confident that with a seating capacity of 10,000, the stadium will be fully-packed with audience on that day. He will be flying to Taipei to undergo training, engage in physical exercise for his body figure and to control his diet so as to present a different Nicholas Teo for the fans.

Those who had attended the press conference included Warner Music Malaysia General Manager, Xie Shu Guang, Huan Yu Television Station Head of Chinese Channel, Zhu Zhi Heng, MY FM Program Manager, Li Zhi Cheng and Red Box Marketing and Development Head, Chen Jia Ming.

Tickets are priced at RM80, RM100, RM150, RM200, RM260 each with an additional RM3 charge. They can be obtained at Sungai Wang Plaza Ground Level, by telephone at 03-92833667/77115000/21452233 or 24-hour online booking at www.starplanet.com.my.

Developer to host CNY charity show

SINGING sensation Michael Wong Guang Liang will be the main draw at a Chinese New Year charity show in Penang organised by developer SP Setia on Feb 15.

The Ipoh-born singer-composer, who is now based in Taiwan, would perform for 45 minutes at the charity show, said SP Setia property division (north) general manager S. Rajoo in Penang.

He said that about 10,000 to 15,000 people were expected to attend the free show, themed SP Setia Cares. Michael Wong sings for Unsung Heroes.

“Our ‘unsung heroes’ are those who tend to the less fortunate at various homes and centres. These people choose to work at such places not to earn a living but because they have a passion to help others,” said Rajoo.

He said the venue would be the Setia Pearl Island’s show village, which is now nearly completed and scheduled to be open for viewing early next month.

Rajoo said the event would begin with a street party from 6pm with fire-eaters, magicians, clowns and a “plastic man.” There will also be lion dance and dragon dance performan-ces.

He said the warm-up show was scheduled to start at 8.30pm with an 88-drum performance by the Malaysian Drum Symphony, followed by singing and dancing by The Three Sisters. There will also be a magic show and an appearance by the God of Prosperity as well as a slide show Tribute to the Unsung Heroes before Wong appears on stage.

“We are also inviting the residents and staff of the Spastic Children Association of Penang and Penang Cheshire Home for a dinner with our purchasers to celebrate Chinese New Year before the show,” he added.

Rajoo said Setia Pearl Island would also be launching its Cedar and Cypress three-storey link houses earlier that morning.

He said there were 19 units of the 20ft by 70ft houses with a built-up area of 3,000sq ft, and 41 units of the 22ft by 80ft homes with a built-up area of 3,300sq ft, with the price at RM798,000 and RM878,000 respectively.

Rajoo also said registration was open for its 84 units of Juniper three-storey semi-detached houses in Sungai Ara with a built-up area of 3,600sq ft.

He said the selling price was RM1.3mil with the launch date being scheduled for the second quarter of the year.

Michael Wong sets hearts aflutter

Michael Wong won fans over with old hits and new melodies at his first solo concert at the Arena of Stars.
Multiple award-winning Michael Wong is an endearing musician who wins even more hearts with his sincerity as he performs his sentimental ballads, which feature heartfelt lyrics and moving melodies.
The Arena of Stars in Genting Highlands was awash with roars of excitement at the most punctual concert ever as Wong started with a fast-paced Jing Tan Hao (Exclamation Mark).
Excited fans, some who came all the way from Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong, expressed their undying love and vowed to be never apart from the Taiwan-based, Ipoh-born singer-composer.

Fans were constantly screaming, stopping only while he was performing.

“If you don’t stop screaming, I’ll have to do something I’ve never done before,” the 37-year-old teased as he peeled off his jacket to reveal a sleeveless white shirt. “I thought about this for a long time as I’ve never worn anything like that before and my mother is here tonight.”

Singing Peng You Shou Ri Feng (Friend’s First Day Cover), he introduced his first guests for the night, label mates, the Asian boyband Boyz Frenz, which comprises Jackson Phang (Malaysia), Desmond Lim (Brunei), Darren Tan (Singapore) and Lance Onate (the Philippines).

“Lance is the first to sing a Filipino version of Tong Hua and it’s very nice.” Encouraged by Wong, Lance gave an impromptu rendition of the Tagalog song Now When You’re Gone.

The boys then entertained with the popular single, Boyfriend, from their debut album Oh! My Honey Boyfriend. Jackson even did a back somersault with a 360° spin.

Sitting at the piano, Wong serenaded the crowd with Yong Qi (Courage), Yong Bao Wo (Hold Me) and Feng Yu Tong Lu (Stand Together).

Amid requests for a piano encore, Wong continued with Cantonese tune Dang (Wait), originally sung by the late Hong Kong singer Danny Chan, and Mandarin song Mei You Yong Jiu De Ai Qing (No Romance Lasts Forever).

“Here’s a thought I’d like to share with you all. One day, I’d like to release an an unplugged album of songs featuring the piano. I’d probably call it My Piano and I. Then, I’d like to hold a concert with me singing and playing the piano only. What do you say?” Shouts of audience approval gave him all the encouragement he needed to proceed with the idea.

Wong sang more than half the songs from his latest solo album Bu Hui Fen Li (Never Apart) as well as chart-topping hits from his other best-selling albums Tong Hua (Fairy Tale), Yue Ding (Commitment), Guang Mang (Ray of Light) and his debut Michael’s First Album.

Then, he brought on Taiwanese artiste Maggie Chiang. Label mates and frequent collaborators, both singers engaged in light banter before singing Zhi Shao Hai You Ni (At Least I Still Have You) and Dui Ni You Gan Jue (I Have Feeling For You).

Chiang’s vocals were superb as she sang her signature hit Ai Ku Gui (Crybaby).

With this very concert, I’ve fulfilled yet another dream – one of holding a solo concert high up in the clouds here at Genting. It was a dream came true when I staged my first solo concert at Hong Kong’s Coliseum, then came my first solo concert in Malaysia at Bukit Jalil.”

Singing Wo Ni De Shou (Shake Your Hand), he mingled with his fans, who surged forward to make physical contact with their idol.

He closed with his biggest hit, Fairy Tale, the song that earned him a listing in the Malaysia Book of Records as the Malaysian Chinese Male Composer with the highest number of awards and also for The Best Selling Chinese Album.

Fans screamed for an encore and he obliged with Never Apart. Fireworks shot from front stage and he was showered with confetti as he took a bow and left the stage.

However, fans couldn’t get enough of him and clamoured for more, so he returned to the stage for the last time with If You Still Love Me, Heaven, First Time and Fairy Tale.

Never Apart – Michael Wong Live in Genting staged last Saturday at the Arena of Stars was organised by Genting Resorts World.

Going places

By S.S. YOGA - THE STAR

There’s no looking back for Victor Wong as he moves into new territory.

They were the trail-blazers who went to Taiwan, kicked opened the door and made the Taiwanese music industry sit up and take notice of Malaysian Chinese musicians.

Thanks to the breakthrough made by musical duo Michael and Victor (otherwise known as Guang Liang Ping Guan to their Malaysian fans), Malaysian artistes such as Fish Leong, Penny Tai and Nicholas Teo are now enjoying success overseas.

However, eight years after they went their separate ways, there remains an aura of mystery behind the break-up.

So it was that when I got the chance to interview Victor Wong Ping Guan recently, I asked him why he and Michael Wong Guang Liang (no relation), broke up after five years as a duo, when they were at the top of their game.

“That is a very common question, and I’ve answered it many times before,” said the soft-spoken 36-year-old who was in town to promote his new English album, Need U Most.

“There was nothing really fishy about it actually. It was a natural progression of things – from the very beginning we had already decided that we would go solo eventually. In fact, we were already progressing down that path – we only sang two songs as a duo in our last album Xiang Jian Ni (Want To See You), the rest were all solo tracks.”

Victor said they signed their first contract with Rock Records as solo artistes, not as a duo. However, because they’d sung together before on a self-produced demo album, the label decided to put them together.

Their debut album, Zhang Xing (Palm), turned out to be a huge success, and they decided to continue as a duo. Despite the successes of Malaysian singers such as Eric Moo and Mindy Quah in past years, Michael and Victor are the ones credited with kick-starting the current influx of Malaysians into the Taiwanese music industry with the success of their debut album in Taiwan – Wu Yin Liang Pin x 2 – which went platinum.

As a duo, Victor and Michael won two Chinese AIM (Anugerah Industri Muzik) awards for Best Group and Best Album in Malaysia, and a whopping 15 awards in total at the 1996 and 1998 PWH (Persatuan Wartawan Hiburan) awards, arguably Malaysia’s biggest Chinese music awards.

Unfortunately, Victor and Michael had different views of their music, and after five successful years together, they decided to part ways.

“Five years together was a very long time for us, especially since we never expected to last so long as a duo in the first place. We both had our own perceptions and preferences on how to make music, and when you are in a duo or group, you are limited by other people’s needs. So in the end, we decided it was best to go separate ways,” said Victor.

English album
While Michael has since switched labels (he joined Seed Music in 2005), Victor is still going strong with Rock Records, and has since released eight solo albums, including his recent debut English album, Need U Most, which according to him is the culmination of his dream to release an English album.

“I’ve been exposed to English songs ever since I was a child, and always fancied doing an English album. So when the record company gave me the chance to do it, I grabbed it! My mother loves the album because many of the songs hold memories for her,” said Victor who dedicated the album to his mother. The album consists of cover versions of songs from different eras ranging from the 1950s to the 1980s, to recent numbers like Way Back Into Love (from the motion picture Music & Lyrics). The songs were chosen based on Victor’s personal favourites, and include classics like Every Breathe You Take, Pretty Woman, Top of The World, and so on. Having sung in Mandarin all these years, switching to English took more effort.

“I had no problem with the pronunciation, but I had to change the way I sing because the tone of Chinese songs is different from English ones,” he said. “We recorded the album in Los Angeles, and while there I did some vocal training so that I can have a different vocal delivery for the English songs.”

That was not the only obstacle Victor had to overcome. The musical arrangements are also different. The Chinese albums offer new compositions and songs, while the English songs have familiar and classic oldies.

“The main focus is still my Chinese audience. I want to let them know that I can sing English songs too. The response so far has been pretty good, and some are asking me when the next volume will be released!”

Challenges ahead

Victor has also branched into acting recently, playing the lead role in his first-ever feature film, Zhu Ting Ai Ni (Determined to Love you), a drama which is produced in China.

“Acting is something very new and interesting to me; it’s similar to singing in that I need to express myself a lot, but instead of just using my voice, I have to use my whole body,” he said. “I felt a bit of pressure because we did the movie in China, and the rest of the cast are trained actors and actresses from China.”

Despite the challenges of juggling a singing career and acting, Victor reckons that versatility is essential for an artiste to survive these days.
The Chinese industry is getting very tough, especially for recording artistes. It’s almost impossible to survive through recording albums alone, unless you’re at the very top. So these days we have to perform in shows, hold concerts, act, and so on.”Victor has never thought of getting back together with Michael, though it may be a hugely popular move.

“I think we are past that. The best time would have been during our 10th anniversary in 2005. Now it will be much more difficult because we’ve developed different styles, and different perception of things. Of course, I’ve had people tell me that our songs as a duo were better, but I think we need to move forward and not look back,” he said with an air of finality.

Well, a pipe dream it may be for now, but with the recent glut of bands reuniting like The Police and Led Zeppelin, anything is possible these days, right? So here’s hoping that we may yet see a reunion of Michael and Victor in the future.

Victor Wong’s debut English album Need U Most is now out in stores.

Cyndi Wang Sings Theme Song for A Cartoon Series

Taiwan pop singer Cyndi Wang has been invited to sing a Chinese version of the theme song of an animated cartoon series that will soon be aired on television.

The song was released on Friday.

S.H.E chosen to sing song for Steven Chow's new movie

According to LianHe Newspapers, Stephen Chow specially chose SHE to sing his new movie’s theme song, CJ7, as he was attracted by their bubbly and playfulness. SHE became the 1st Taiwanese singing group to work with him.

To respect the movie company, HIM kept a low profile on this news. However SHE’s Cantonese song teacher-singer, Dai Pei Jia, revealed her experiences of recording with SHE on her blog. She praised SHE for learning fast and catching the Cantonese accent accurately. Fans who visited her blog shared this information and instantly many caught on the news. It was said that Stefanie Sun also wished to work with Stephen Chow, but yet SHE managed to seize the collaboration opportunity first.

Sources revealed that the movie company approached SHE and they specially flew to Hong Kong to sing the theme song 《7仔》(literal translation: 7th Boy). This song is written based on the “outer space dog”. The song also had playful lyrics such as (literal translation), “7th boy, 7th boy, he likes everything… turn around and change his look, using his magical antenna, shining lights, every cells changed, hugging you tight, in my hands, flying around with 7th boy.” SHE sounded very mischievous in the song.

Fahrenheit & S.H.E playing in the snow ;Wu Zun loves eating Peking duck

The closeknit FRH and S.H.E have come together once again to shoot a yoghurt commercial, 5 million yuan of endorsement fees safely in their pockets! To have a deeper understanding of this new product, the 7 specially flew to Mongolia's factory in the morning to tour the production process, as they were informed that the weather was very cold, only around -20deg, everyone came well prepared with coats, scarves, gloves, even heating pads. However upon seeing the whole place covered with snow, they were so excited they forgot about the chill; after the tour, the brand company even specially prepared the prized "grassland abalone" for them to sample. Following that they caught flights to Beijing for work, Wu Zun who was hankering for the famous Peking roast duck, upon reaching the restaurant immediately ordered two ducks and ate them up in no time, and even ordered a third, no wonder he said with great satisfaction, "Beijing's good food gives us even more energy to make all our events!"

Fans fined for breaching airport rules

Credits: Newpaper
By Chang May Choon

TAIWAN star Jay Chou will arrive tomorrow afternoon on flight BR225 to perform in two concerts
here in Singapore.

Mr Sin Teck Wee was among the many fans who greeted Taiwanese singer Jay Chou at the airport's transit area in July last year.
But if you think the fastest way to catch a glimpse of the star is to buy an air ticket to get into the restricted areas inside Changi Airport, think again.
Some hardcore fans are known to resort to this rather pricey method to see their idols up close.
But those who do so are actually breaking the law.

Two of Jay's fans found this out the hard way when they were recently fined $1,000 each
for doing that on 30 Jul last year.
Jay, 29, was then in town to promote his movie Secret and appeared at a meet-and-greet
session for transit passengers at the Terminal One transit mall area after arriving.

Sin Teck Wee, 33, and Jocelyn Soh Chia Ling, 28, were found to have bought air tickets to
Kuala Lumpur to gain entry into the transit area to see him.

NO-GO ZONE

However, only 'passengers with boarding passes who are proceeding to their next destination'
are allowed in this area. This means that those who enter the transit area must go on to board
their flights. Both Sin and Soh had no intention of flying off despite holding boarding passes.
They ended up being detained by an Immigration and Checkpoints Authority officer and
were handed over to the police.According to court papers, they were each fined
the maximum of $1,000 for breaching the Protected Areas and Protected Places Act.
They could also have been jailed up to two years.

Many Singaporeans were not aware that buying an air ticket to enter the transit area
without actually flying is an offence here.

'Is it so serious?' was a common response.

The New Paper understands that some fans who have done so in the past had been given verbal warnings. Others apparently managed to convince the airlines to change their flight after meeting their idols. They then used their tickets on a later date.
A spokesman for HIM Music, which manages popular Taiwanese boy band Fahrenheit,
said that she had seen fans who obviously bought air tickets just to see the quartet.
Many such fans are teenage girls.

NO LUGGAGE

She said they had no luggage and their eyes were transfixed on the band even while
queuing to clear immigration.
They would then follow the guys around 'as if they're travelling together', and try to talk to them.
But the spokesman said she was not sure if the girls boarded a plane in the end or simply turned around and went home.

Freelance photojournalist Tony Yap told The New Paper that he realised it was an offence in 2003 after an airport official stopped him from taking pictures of Taiwanese pop group 5566 inside the transit hall.
Mr Yap, 26, was returning from an overseas holiday when he bumped into 5566 by chance.
But once he whipped out a camera and snapped away, he was stopped by an official.
'He asked if I had bought a ticket to see the group and said it was not allowed,' Mr Yap recalled.
'He asked for my passport and boarding pass, and even checked my overseas stamp.'

Fans who want to see Jay tomorrow can wait for him outside the arrival hall at Terminal One.
Mr Jonathan Tan, artiste and repertoire director of Hype Records, which is organising Jay's concerts,
said it was 'not worth it' to break the law.
'Let this be a note of caution to fans,' he told The New Paper.
'There are other ways to support an artiste, and Jay himself would not be happy to hear that
his fans broke the law to see him.'

Fish Leung profile

Fish Leong (traditional Chinese: 梁靜茹; simplified Chinese: 梁静茹; pinyin: Liáng Jìngrú; born June 16, 1978 in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia with family root in Shunde, Guangdong, China) is the stage name of Jasmine Leong, a Chinese Malaysian singer in the Mandarin pop scene who has had much success in Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan. She is best known for her love-themed ballads, many of which have become popular KTV hits.

BIBIOGRAFI

Leong was born in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia and she grew up in Bahau, a small town where is half an hour driving time away from Kuala Pilah. Her real name is "Leong Chui Peng" (Chinese: 梁翠萍; pinyin: Liáng Cùipíng). She started her career as a cover version singer at Hai Luo Music Cafe. Z-Chen is her cousin.
In her youth, Leong had participated in many local singing competitions and emerged as the winner in a few of them. Veteran singer Jonathan Lee discovered her during a singing competition at Hai Luo. She was then singing a song called Qī Dài (期待) which was composed by her friend. She started her career in Taiwan, in October 1997, after joining Rock Records of Taiwan. It was then that she adopted the name "Fish", because the last character of her name "茹" sounds like "fish" (魚) in Cantonese. Her debut album Yí Yè Zhǎng Dà (一夜長大) was released after two years, only to encounter an earthquake on the day of the album launch promotion (21 September 1999). Her career only managed to take off after the successful launch of her second album Yǒng Qì (勇氣), which means courage.
Leong has enjoyed collaborations with prominent Chinese songwriters and producers, such as Lee-Hom Wang and Ashin of Mayday, the latter being her fellow labelmate. She has also sung duets with fellow Malaysians and labelmates, Guang Liang, Pin Guan and Yu Heng. Her albums have been best-sellers in the East Asia region, including Singapore and Taiwan, where she is based. Since making her debut in 1999, Leong has released eight solo albums. Her best-selling album The Power of Love had sold in excess of 1.5 million copies in Asia and more than 40,000 copies were sold in Singapore alone. Wings Of Love, her seventh and double-platinum album, topped Singapore’s RIAS sales chart for two weeks and remained within the top 15 positions for more than two months. Her Silk Road album in 2005 had sold 1 million copies in Asia. At the Singapore Hits Awards 2003, she was crowned the Best Female Vocalist. In 2004, she was presented with the Regional (Malaysia) Most Popular Singer prize at the same event. In 2005, she won the Most Popular Female Singer and Regional (Malaysia) Most Popular Singer awards. After the success of the Love Parade World Tour 2004/2005, she is now preparing for another series of world tour concerts (including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mainland China, Malaysia and Singapore) which will be begin on February 2007. Her latest album "Kissing The Future Of Love" is a hit and topped the Mandarin charts for weeks.
